On May 18, 1927, Andrew Kehoe, the school board treasurer of the Bath Consolidated School in Michigan, detonated a bomb in the school, killing 38 people and injuring 58 others. This event is considered to be the first modern mass shooting in the United States.
Kehoe was a 55-year-old farmer and businessman who had been feuding with the school board over taxes. He had also been experiencing financial problems and had recently lost his wife to cancer. On the day of the bombing, Kehoe drove a truck loaded with dynamite to the school and parked it in the basement. He then went inside the school and set the bomb to detonate at 9:45 a.m.
The bomb exploded with devastating force, destroying the school and killing or injuring most of the people inside. The victims included 30 children, seven teachers, and one visitor. Kehoe himself was killed in the explosion.
The Bath School Disaster was a horrific event that shocked the nation. It led to a number of changes in school security and law enforcement, including the creation of the FBI's National Crime Information Center.
The Bath School Disaster also had a profound impact on the way that we think about mass shootings. Before this event, mass shootings were relatively rare. But in the years since Bath, there have been numerous other mass shootings, including the shootings at Columbine High School, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook Elementary School, and Las Vegas.
The Bath School Disaster was a watershed moment in the history of mass shootings. It was the first time that a lone gunman had killed so many people in such a short amount of time. This event helped to create the modern mass killer, a person who is willing to kill dozens or even hundreds of people in order to achieve their goals.
Andrew Kehoe: A Profile of the Modern Mass Killer
Andrew Kehoe was a complex and troubled man. He was born in 1872 to a poor farming family in Michigan. Kehoe was a bright child, but he had a difficult childhood. His father was an alcoholic, and his mother died when he was young. Kehoe was raised by his grandparents, who were strict and religious.
As a young man, Kehoe worked as a farmer and a schoolteacher. He married in 1902, and the couple had two children. Kehoe was a successful farmer, but he was also a heavy drinker. He was also known for his quick temper and his tendency to hold grudges.
In 1924, Kehoe was elected to the Bath school board. He quickly became involved in a feud with the other board members over taxes. Kehoe believed that the school board was spending too much money and that taxes were too high. He also opposed the construction of a new school building.
Kehoe's feud with the school board escalated over time. He made threats of violence, and he even threatened to kill the superintendent of schools. In 1926, Kehoe lost his re-election bid for the school board. This defeat further fueled his anger and resentment.
On May 18, 1927, Kehoe carried out his deadly plan. He drove a truck loaded with dynamite to the Bath Consolidated School and parked it in the basement. He then went inside the school and set the bomb to detonate at 9:45 a.m.
The bomb exploded with devastating force, destroying the school and killing or injuring most of the people inside. The victims included 30 children, seven teachers, and one visitor. Kehoe himself was killed in the explosion.
