Early Life

Margaret Corbin was born in 1751 in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Robert Cochran, a farmer, and his wife, Jane. Corbin had three brothers and two sisters. She grew up on her family's farm and received a basic education.

In 1772, Corbin married John Corbin, a farmer and soldier. The couple had two children, a son and a daughter.

Revolutionary War

When the Revolutionary War broke out in 1775, John Corbin joined the Continental Army. Margaret Corbin followed her husband to war and served as a camp follower. She cooked for the soldiers, washed their clothes, and nursed the sick and wounded.

In November 1776, the Continental Army was defeated at the Battle of Fort Washington. John Corbin was killed in the battle, and Margaret Corbin was wounded in the leg.

Despite her injuries, Corbin refused to leave the battlefield. She took over her husband's artillery post and continued to fire on the British. She was eventually forced to retreat, but she had proven herself to be a brave and determined soldier.

Later Life

Margaret Corbin was captured by the British after the Battle of Fort Washington. She was held prisoner for several months before being released in a prisoner exchange.

After the war, Corbin returned to Pennsylvania and lived with her children. She received a pension from the government for her service in the war.

Margaret Corbin died in 1829. She is buried in the Trinity Episcopal Churchyard in Manhattan, New York City.

Legacy

Margaret Corbin is remembered as a hero of the Revolutionary War. She was the first woman to receive a military pension from the United States government.
