The Wesleyan Poetry Series has long been a champion of new and innovative voices in poetry. With its latest release, Seasonal Works With Letters On Fire, the series continues its commitment to publishing work that is both challenging and rewarding.
This collection features the work of seven poets: Rachel Eliza Griffiths, Jake Skeets, Ocean Vuong, Kazim Ali, Tracy K. Smith, Terrance Hayes, and Claudia Rankine. Each poet brings their own unique perspective to the themes of nature, memory, and loss that run throughout the collection.
Rachel Eliza Griffiths' poems are full of lush imagery and evocative language. In "The Wild Fox of Yemen," she writes:
The wild fox of Yemen is a creature of the night, its coat a tapestry of stars, its eyes like two pools of moonlight. It moves through the desert with a grace that is both beautiful and deadly. Its sharp teeth can tear through flesh with ease, and its claws can draw blood.
Jake Skeets' poems explore the intersections of Native American identity and contemporary culture. In "Winter Song," he writes:
The snow falls like feathers from the sky, covering the earth in a white blanket. The wind howls like a wolf, chilling me to the bone. I am lost in this wilderness, alone and afraid.
Ocean Vuong's poems are characterized by their raw emotion and confessional style. In "On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous," he writes:
On earth we're briefly gorgeous, then we're gone. But in that brief moment, we're everything. We're the sun and the moon, the stars and the planets. We're the ocean and the sky, the earth and the fire.
Kazim Ali's poems are a meditation on the nature of time and change. In "The Forgetting River," he writes:
The river of forgetting flows through my mind, washing away the memories that I hold dear. One by one, they slip away, like leaves on a stream, until I am left with nothing but a blank void.
Tracy K. Smith's poems are a celebration of the everyday. In "Life on Mars," she writes:
Life on Mars is not what it seems. There are no canals, no little green men. Just a barren wasteland, and a whole lot of dust. But I'm here, and I'm not going anywhere.
Terrance Hayes' poems are a exploration of the power of language. In "Wind in a Box," he writes:
I have a box of wind. I keep it under my bed. When I'm feeling down, I open the box and let the wind out. The wind fills my room, and it makes me feel better. It reminds me that I'm alive, and that there's still hope.
Claudia Rankine's poems are a powerful indictment of racism and inequality. In "The End of the Alphabet," she writes:
The end of the alphabet is not the end of anything. It's just the beginning of a new world. A world where we are all equal, and where we all have a voice. A world where we can all live in peace and harmony.
Seasonal Works With Letters On Fire is a powerful and moving collection of poetry that explores the human experience in all its complexity. These seven poets offer their unique perspectives on the themes of nature, memory, and loss, and their work will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
